Since developing and displaying our EV systems test vehicle we are experiening an unprecedented level of interest from both the commercial sector and the general public in electric vehicle conversions. As a result of which we have compiled a mini faq on the subject :
- Do I have to pay motor tax on a converted vehicle? If so how much?
Yes. If the donor vehicle is registered before 2008 it will incur a motor tax rate of €146 per year. Post 2008 donor vehicles would be €104 per year. Taxation is simply a matter of filling out a change of particulars form at the tax office and have a garage stamp the form. This is the same procedure for a change of engine in a standard vehicle.
2. What about the NCT?
NCT is no problem. No emissions tests are carried out and only normal vehicle systems independent of the traction system are tested. eg. tyres , brakes , suspension etc.
3. Can I get insurance for a converted vehicle?
Yes. If you encounter difficulties in this area contact us and we will put you in touch with a broker who understands conversions. As electric cars become more commonplace we expect most insurance companies to quickly offer this service as part of the normal qoutation system.
